Our first day of riding takes us from the heart of Seoul into the peaceful countryside. We begin along the Cheonggyecheon Stream’s bike lanes before merging onto the Han River Bike Path, riding about 40 km past parks, promenades, and fellow cyclists. As we move farther from the city, the skyline fades and the crowds disappear. Near the meeting point of the North and South Han Rivers, the scenery transforms completely. We stop at a hidden café known for Korean rice cakes and expertly brewed espresso, then continue the final 20 km along riverside paths through tunnels, dams, and lush landscapes. We finish the day near Yangpyeong, famous for its hangover soup, Hae-jang-guk.

We continue to follow the banks of the South Han River. We follow its course southwards, heading to Yeoju for lunch. Yeoju is a city renowned for its centuries-old heritage of ceramic craftsmanship, particularly its exquisite Korean porcelain, which has earned it the title “City of Porcelain.” Silleuksa Temple. Here we get a taste of ancient Korea as we explore this splendid Buddhist temple complex situated by the river and dating back to the 6th century AD. We’ll learn about the early days of Buddhism in Korea and appreciate the well-preserved architecture, such as the main hall adorned with exquisite ceramic roof tiles, each intricately designed with floral motifs. We continue our journey along the South Han River after a good meal and make our way deeper into central Korea. We end for the night at the first of 2 hot spring towns. The perfect way to relax after a day full of exploration!

We continue south along the Namhan River Bike Path, cutting through serene rural landscapes covered with rice paddies and villages. After the beautiful Tangeum Lake at Chungju city, we say goodbye to the South Han River, and we connect with the Saejae Bicycle Path. This path brings us past a beautiful wooden suspension bridge, and slowly we become surrounded by the lush green mountains around Suanbo. Suanbo has been the Hot Spring City of choice for several kings and presidents of Korea for the past centuries. It has the feel of a small city deep in the mountains, providing another relaxing night before the big challenge on day 5!

We start our cycling morning with a bit climbing, but the way to the top is scattered with rewards for our efforts! We pass by a beautiful waterfall, a centuries-old buddha carving and we get spectacular views of the valley. After celebrating our heroic climb up, we cross into the North Gyeongsang Province and a long downhill awaits us. The way uphill lasts for 5 kilometers at a very reasonable gradient, but we end up with over 20 kilometers downwards. We continue downhill after our lunch and pass by an excellent coffee stop for those looking to enjoy the most popular drink in South Korea: an (ice) americano. The city of Mungyeong awaits a little further with plenty of options for dinner and a local market for exploration in the morning.

On our final riding day, we connect with yet another beautiful bicycle path, the Nakdong River Bicycle Path. This is a particularly scenic rural area, with the river – and our cycling route – braiding its way through rice paddies, vegetable farms, quaint villages, and dense woodlands. While we stick to the valley floor, panoramas of the lush hillscape surrounding us are ever present. We end the ride at Andong Hahoe Village, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This traditional Hanok village is the perfect place to spend our final night.

Accommodation : Hanok Homestay in UNESCO Heritage Hahoe Village

Ride : 58km

The morning is set aside for an off-saddle exploration of Andong Hahoe Village, a treasure trove of Korean history and traditions dating back 600 years. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the village displays the pre-modern, clan-based lifeways of rural Korea at the time of the Joseon Dynasty. We will wander the winding streets and peek into the well-preserved tile-roofed houses known as hanok. The village is also renowned for its expressive and colorful wooden masks which are used in performances of Korean folklore. After our ground-level exploration of the village, we’ll hike up to the nearby Buyongdae Cliff, affording us a bird’s-eye view of the picturesque Nakdong River and the sprawling countryside that stretches beyond. After finishing the village tour, we will transfer to Andong train station for your onward journey to Gyeongju. In classic Korean style, we end the tour with another great lunch, before catching the train.
